McLaren F1
The McLaren
F1 is one of the fastest and most popular supercars of all time.
The McLaren F1 was in production from 1994 to 1998 with a cool price
of $1 million sans options and only 100 cars were built. A fully
loaded McLaren F1 may cost as much as $1.2 million or above.
In its time,
the McLaren F1 was the fastest production car in the planet topping
out at 240.14 mph. The McLaren F1 held the speed record until 2005
when two other vehicles successively broke the record.
The McLaren
race team burst on the scene in 1966 and have since won the Grand
Prix 123 times, Formula One 19 times and Indianapolis 500, three
times. The McLaren F1 is the brainchild of owner Bruce McLaren who
was a brilliant driver, engineer, inventor and now owner.
A supercar
2-door, 3-seat coupe, the McLaren F1 features a 6.1-litre 60-degree
V12 BMW V12 engine, specially built for world class sprinter starts
and screaming top end speeds. Rated at 627 hp and 651 Nm of torque,
the McLaren F1 accelerates from 0 - 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.
The McLaren
F1 was the first vehicle to utilize a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis
in order to improve strength and reduce overall weight. Other expensive
metals were used in the construction of the F1 such as titanium,
magnesium and gold. In fact, the McLaren F1's engine compartment
was lined with 8-ounces of gold foil in order to reflect heat. Bruce
McLaren had insisted that the F1 be normally-aspirated instead of
using superchargers or turbochargers, so the gold foil helped prevent
overheating.
As one of the
most popular exotic cars in the last
30 years, the McLaren F1 has found a fervent following with celebrities
and notables despite the steep price tag. Ralph Lauren has owned
two F1's and others that have been on the McLaren F1 bandwagon include
Jay Leno, Michael Andretti, George Harrison and Michael Schumacher.
It is a rare
occurrence when a used McLaren F1 supercar will pop up for sale.
When this has happened within the past several years, the price
tag has well exceeded the original sticker price, which just shows
how highly popular this vehicle remains.
