BMW H2R Hydrogen Racecar

The BMW H2R is a dual-fuel hydrogen-gasoline racecar that has set 9 international land-speed records when run entirely on hydrogen. For the purposes of setting the land-speed records at the Miramas Proving Grounds in France, the gasoline capabilities of the car were disabled.

The BMW H2R (which stands for either racecar or record car) is one of the few hydrogen cars developed, which uses an internal combustion engine (ICE) instead of a fuel cell for power. BMW is also rolling out a vehicle with a similar engine in 2007 to 100 select customers called the Hydrogen 7 automobile.

The BMW H2R uses a modified 6.0-liter V12 based on its flagship 760Li limousine to run on either hydrogen or gasoline with the flip of a switch. The dual-fuel racecar is rated at 285 hp and has a top speed of 185.5 mph, with acceleration from 0 - 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. Modifications were made to the fuel injection system and seals to accommodate hydrogen, which is more prone to leakage because of the small size of the H2 atom.

DesignWorks, USA conceived the space age body style of the BMW H2R. The frame and body are aluminum over which a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic outer body has been placed. BMW has made strides in solving the "chicken and the egg" problem faced by hydrogen car manufacturers and infrastructure developers by demonstrating vehicles that can run on either hydrogen or gasoline until a hydrogen infrastructure is in place.

While many people believe all hydrogen cars should be small, compact fuel-sippers, BMW has gone the other direction and shown that hydrogen cars can be lean, mean race machines as well.
